That ‘immunity’ is, perhaps, the second most discussed word in last two years is hardly a surprise, because ‘COVID’ likely tops the list. SARS CoV2 virus brought the world to an abrupt halt, scurrying the scientific world to look for desperate solutions in the unlikeliest of places including debatable solutions like Hydroxychloroquine, Ivermectin and Plasma Therapy. Amongst lesser noticed was the approval of the use of Andrographis paniculate as a treatment of COVID-19 by Thailand cabinet. Natural/herbal immunity ingredients, though age old, have an increasing patronage in the post COVID times. Here are a herbs which have been at the forefront of immunity:
1. Turmeric
2. Ashwagandha
3. Giloy
4. Moringa
5. Andrographis
Among these, Andrographis is the lesser known and lesser used one, perhaps due to its extremely bitter taste (it is also called ‘King of Bitters’). However, in terms of its anti-viral activity, it is also the most promising. Clinical researches undertaken on the main bioactive – Andrographolide - finds it to be effective in inhibition of viral replication, in-vitro and in-vivo. The good part, this activity is observed in a slew of viruses including HPV, Influenza A virus, hepatitis B virus hepatitis C virus, herpes simplex virus, HIV[1] and H1N1[2]. Andrographolide’s activity against the corona family of viruses in particular is interesting. It is attributed to the diterpenoid’s role in interfering with cell signalling pathways and its docking against the inhibitor region of the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 virus. The not so good part about Andrographolide, it has limited water solubility, thus, impacting its absorption and bio-availability.
Upper respiratory tract infection: Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses. Nasal tract is usually the entry point for these viruses. Hence, application of anti-viral/medicine through nasal pathway is an interesting prospect. For a natural immunity ingredient like Andrographolide, however, nasal application has not been tested until now. BioImmune, which is a supramolecular inclusion complex of Andrographolide, has been formulated for both, oral as well as nasal application. It is a more potent form of Andrographolide that promises significantly high water solubility and absorption in the body. The published paper on its in-vitro test against COVID-19 virus, highlight its effectivity in inhibiting the replication of the SARS CoV2 virus by over 99.91%.
